Memphis, Destination 2 of our big adventure :)
How we got there:
It is approx. 220 miles from Nashville to Memphis, so we hired a car to get the full experience and have the freedom to stop where and when we wanted. We of course had to get our hands on a convertible Ford Mustang because if we were driving it, we wanted to make it memorable, and it most certainly was.
Where we stayed:
The hotel was very central and modern. It offered a free shuttle to anywhere within a 3 miles radius (just remember to tip the driver, it is America lol). The rooms were spacious and clean, and the food was delicious. This hotel is within walking distance of Beale Street, The Peabody Hotel and much more.
What we did:
Graceland: While we still had the car hire, we drove to see Graceland. We did not do the tour, but we saw up to the house and the outside of Elvis's two private jet and that was awesome. The tour was approx. $48 each.
Beale Street: This is the main street of Memphis. We checked it out in the morning time, so it was quiet, and we were able to see about very well. There was an odour on the street, and it was not the nicest. lol. There was a fun, fresh and colourful music vibe on the street with murals and guitars. There was a bar and the beer garden had goats in it which was so funny.
Bass Pro Pyramid: This used to be the Memphis Superdome but is now owned by the Bass Pro Store. It is a hotel, Bass Pro Store, bowling alley, restaurant, aquarium and at the top has a beautiful viewing area of the city with glass floor balcony. We walked around the shop first which took some time and saw the aquarium and there are alligators which was so cool. Ater this we paid $8 each to get the lift up to the restaurant and viewpoint. The views were out of this world and the food smelt amazing but we had dinner booked for the Peabody Hotel so we could only enjoy the smell. We then went bowling and we honestly had so much fun bowling... safe to say we are not professional bowlers lol.
The Peabody Hotel: This was on my list for sure as it was recommended to me by a friend who had stayed here so I had pre-booked a dinner reservation here. There are resident ducks in the hotel which come down in the morning, do a walking parade before going to the fountain in the lobby and then the same to go back to their own section of the hotel in the evening, of course I had to see this before dinner. The show started at 5pm and we got there for 4.30pm and there was already a big crown with no seating left in the lobby/bar area. The lobby master told the story of The Peabody Hotel and how ducks became residents before the ducks walked to the lift to go to bed. It was such a fun experience and so different for a hotel. The Peabody Hotel is a stunning hotel.
Where we ate:
Crowne Plaza Memphis: We had dinner at the hotel the night we arrived, chicken goujons, chips & barbecue sauce and omg it just hits different in America, and it was so tasty.
Arcade Restaurant: I had pre-booked us a late breakfast at the Arcade as it had been recommended to me. This is the oldest restaurant in Memphis which is awesome. It had the full diner vibes. The staff were friendly, the coffee was good, and the food was nice so worth a visit.
Peabody Hotel: After the duck show we grabbed a drink before our dinner reservation. I had the spaghetti bolognese and himself had a pizza, and we were both very pleased with our meals. This would be another recommendation if you're in Memphis.
Personally, I would not go back to Memphis as it does not have a lot to offer, and it does have the third highest crime rate in America. Most people we spoke to in Nashville told us to be safe when in Memphis which probably made us nervous going there. I would say if you're a big Elvis fan then most certainly go to see his house etc. but 2 days would be enough. This is only my opinion though.
Next stop .... New Orleans Baby
